Young Black Men Mentoring Programme
Young Black Men Mentoring Programme
East Potential runs a mentoring programme that aims to empower young black men across east London and Essex to make the step into meaningful employment and achieve their career goals.

It pairs young black men with black mentors who have achieved success in different areas of work, and offers a wider support network.
The programme works by engaging young black men who are work-ready, but who want support in taking the next step. It aims to:

  • Provide young black men with support and encouragement

  • Help young black men develop their confidence and understanding of the world of work

  • Support young black men in considering options and working out the best career path Help young black men overcome any barriers they might face in achieving employment in the field they want to work in

A matching evening is held to help pair up mentees with mentors who can provide the right support for them. Mentors and mentees also receive training to help them get the most out the programme. Each pair then meets regularly over a six month period, completing a mentoring diary and receiving ongoing support from East Potential. The programme is being delivered in partnership with c-a-n-i, an education and training consultancy that works to engage and benefit adults and young people.

The programme was set up after research commissioned by East Potential into Barriers to Employment Faced by Young Black Men highlighted the need for role models to reduce the disproportionate number of unemployed young black men.

It was launched at the House of Commons by David Lammy MP, Minister for Higher Education and Intellectual Property, Lord Ouseley, ex-Chair of the Commission for Racial Equality, and David Weaver, co-founder of Operation Black Vote.

East Potential is seeking both mentors and mentees to take part, as well as business partners to support and promote the programme.
