Board Members
East Potential, like many other charitable organisations, has a Voluntary Board. Board members are unpaid 'lay-people' who help to provide strategic guidance to the organisation and its policies.
The Board members are also instrumental in the recruitment and overseeing of the Senior Management Team - the people who run the business day-to-day.
Current Board Members:
Sandra Fryer
Chair, East Potential, appointed 2008

Sandra is a consultant with a background in planning, regeneration and sustainable development and was Interim Executive Director of Neighbourhood Services at Newham in 2007/8. She is a member of the Policy Council of the Town and Country Planning Association and adviser on eco-towns and sustainable communities. She has also held various other local and central government positions. As Chair of East Potential, Sandra also sits on the Group Board.

Alan Wells OBE
Deputy Chair, appointed 2007

Alan is also the Deputy Chair for the NHS Waltham Forest and was previously a director of the Basic Skills Agency, the specialist advice and development body for literacy and numeracy.

Stephane Koumba
Independent Member, appointed 2008

Stephane is a former East Potential resident and is currently with solicitors, Trowers & Hamlins.

Joe Tuke
Independent Member, appointed 2008

Joe is currently a Director for the Commission for Victims and Witnesses. He has previously held senior positions with the department of Neighbourhood Crime and Justice, the Respect Task Force and Anti-social behaviour unit at the Home Office, Crime and Communities Review at the Cabinet Office and the Youth Task Force at the Dept for Children, Schools and Families. He has also been Assistant Director, Homelessness Directorate, Office of Deputy Prime Minister and Assistant Director of Housing at London Borough of Camden.

Alec Dick
Independent Member, appointed 2009

Alec is a regeneration and renewal professional with over 30 years experience in the public, private and voluntary sectors. He has held senior level positions in these sectors and has a proven track record of success in physical, social and economic regeneration and neighbourhood renewal.


Richard Penny
Treasurer, appointed 2009

Richard is a Chartered Accountant with over 20 years post qualification experience. He has a wide cross section of experience in a diverse range of organisations, including support services, not-for-profit, central government, financial services and automotive industries.

Carolyn Clarke
Independent Member, appointed 2010

Carolyn is a public sector regeneration specialist with extensive experience in homelessness, community and user engagement and development and public health. Between 2000 and 2009 she was Deputy Chief Executive of the Shoreditch Trust, an award winning pathfinder for New Deal for Communities Programme. Other appointments include Director of Service and Development at Crisis ( 1997 – 2000) and Assistant Director of Public Health – Brent and Harrow Health Authority (1992 – 1997).

Christine Bowden
Independent Member, appointed 2010

Christine is the former Deputy to the Executive Mayor at Newham Council. As part of this role she was also Chair of the Community Executive, Member of the Audit Committee and the Pensions and Investment Committee, Member of the East London Business Alliance Thames Gateway Forum and Member of the 5 borough officer\member Olympic Committee. Prior to this Christine was the Manager, Community Links New Deal and developed the Community Links New Deal for the unemployed programme.
