Support Available
Due to the demand for qualified construction workers the programme is developing and growing to meet the demands of the industry.

Support available to learners includes:

Taster Courses
Short courses to give learners the opportunity to have a go at various trades.

Accredited Qualifications
Courses available include the City & Guilds Multi Skills Qualification with on the job training and the CSCS Card.

Support to find Employment
Including work experience, CV writing, interviewing skills, site visits, one to one support and links to contractors with real vacancies.

Other support includes basic skills training, financial support for travel and childcare.
Overview of Training
2 Week Taster Course (15 Learners)
Full time: Mon - Fri, 9am-4pm

First week:
  • 3 teams construct 3 timber framed pods
  • Put together and fit flat pack kitchen units
  • Plumb in sink
  • Plumb and box in bath
  • Fit architrave & skirting boardsChanging and replacing electrical sockets/light fittings

Second week:
  • Health & Safety training
  • CV Writing
  • Personal development
  • Employability skills
16 Week 'Voids' Programme (20 Learners)
Learners must successfully complete 2 week Taster Course before being selected for this course.

Part Time:

  • Practical Training
    2 days per week, 9am-4pm
  • Employability Sessions
    1 day per week, 9am-4pm

Course is delivered between 2 venues:

1. The Training Centre where learners gain skills & underpinning knowledge.

2. 'Void' (empty home): East Thames properties where they gain practical experience.
Learners studying towards City & Guilds 6217 Multi-Skills Qualification and CSCS Card
Modules covered:

  • Fixing skirting to a timber background
  • Constructing through mortice and tenon
  • Introduction to Plumbing
  • Connecting Plastic Fittings to Sink
  • Electrical Installations
  • Health & Safety
  • Hazards, Tools & Materials
  • Painting a timber window and frame
  • Applying emulsion to wall by roller

Learners will undertake the following activities in the void (empty) properties:

  • Clear properties in preparation for refurbishment
  • Prepare walls and doors for painting
  • Undertake necessary remedial work to wall surfaces
  • Apply undercoat and topcoat to walls and ceilings
  • Construct and fit new kitchen units in void properties
  • Undertake plumbing activities
  • Undertake ceramic tiling as necessary

Those learners that are not offered a place on the Voids Programme, but have previous experience within the industry - will be offered the opportunity to undertake the CSCS training.

They will also be supported to help gain other training opportunities, work experience or employment.
Employability Sessions
In addition to the practical training learners will be provided with the following support during the course:

  • CV writing
  • Interview skills
  • Individual action plans
  • Work experience placements
  • Site visits
  • Advice on CIS Cards and self-employment
  • Introductions and links to contractors
  • Basic Skills support where necessary (literacy & numeracy)
Links with Contractors
The aim of this training is to help and support local residents into employment.

Under the East Thames Framework Agreement, contractors and consultants will have an obligation to offer employment and training opportunities to trainees accessing this programme.

  • Presentations at Awareness Sessions
  • Employability Talks
  • Sponsorship of Training – ie donation of materials, Personal Protective Equipment, Tools, etc
